Game of Kings, The Gazette

A Gazette Chess column called “Our Chess Column” appears in 1886. Eventually the column is changed to simply “Chess” in 1895. Then becomes “The Chess Column” in 1900.

Under editorship of D.M. LeDain becomes the “Chess Moves, News and Views” column and retains that title throughout the 1950s By the 1960's D.M. LeDain's column appears as “The Game of Kings”.

The Gazette Montreal, Quebec, Canada Friday, January 22, 1886

“Owing to the amount of interest in the game of chess as evidenced by the number of letters which we have received anent the great tournament now in progress, the GAZETTE has decided to add to its columns a carefully edited chess department, which will have its workings shown on the Wednesday morning of each week. One of the most able players and writers in this country has been engaged to edit the column, and we look with confidence to its being made most interesting as well as of substantial use to the clubs of the Dominion. All questions pertaining to the royal game will have careful consideration and answers.”

“It originated as a symbol used by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC). An artist, Gerald Holtom, was on the groups' board, and as a well-known designer, stepped up to create a symbol that would have not only a visual but also a political impact. The symbol was first displayed during a protest march that took place on Easter weekend of 1958. Protesters marched 52 miles from London to Aldermaston in Berkshire, which is the site of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment to protest the use of nuclear weapons in war. This march was organized by the DAC and it was the first wide spread public display of the peace sign.”

Bobby's views never strayed far from his roots. The collage above, mentions BERTRAND RUSSELL, who was responsible for putting the peace signs on the 1958 banners and buttons of the activists. BERTRAND RUSSELL held strong views opposing the Apartheid of Israel. Just as Bobby did. Bobby never abandoned his leftist-leaning roots which he learned from Regina Fischer. He loathed Fascism.
