Learn Chess Fast
A flat tile set is the latest teaching aid for quick mastery of fundamentals, color-coded for beginners. One face of each chessman shows its move, range and name; the reverse face shows its symbol in diagrams.
This Quick Master Chess kit and the text Chess/Beginner to Expert and 2 issues of Chess Life (a $20.15 value) is now $15 from the non-profit U. S. Chess Federation, Box E, 479 Broad-way, Newburgh, N. Y. 12550.
Rules
1. All units may move in one direction at a time only to vacant squares, except when capturing enemy units. Only the Knight may jump over another unit.
2. All captures are optional: remove the enemy unit from the board and displace it with the capturing unit.
THE KING moves 1 square in ally direction, but may never be exposed voluntarily to capture. If you lose your King, you lose the game. Checkmate!
THE ROOK moves any desired number of squares, north, south, east or west, provided there is no unit in its straight path.
THE BISHOP moves diagonally as far as desired in any direction, but it cannot zig-zag or change colors.
THE QUEEN is the most powerful unit, combining the scope of a Rook and Bishops.
THE KNIGHT jumps in an L-shape onto another color — 1 square straight, 1 square oblique, in any direction.
THE PAWN is the only unit which can never retreat! It marches straight ahead, 1 square at a time or, if desired, 2 spaces on its initial move only. The Pawn does not capture as it moves: it captures in a V-shape, diagonally in front of it.
PROBLEM SOLUTION: 1 K-N2! (If 1 … B-B5 2 N-K5 mate.)
