Problem Composing Contest
A $600 prize fund has been announced by the Piatigorsky Foundation for its 3rd international endgame and problem contest, open to composers anywhere in the world. Deadline for entries is December 31, 1972. All submissions must he originals never before published, accompanied by 2 diagrams with full solutions and all variations. No material will he returned. Submit to Pal Benko, Box 313, Gracie Station, NY, NY 10028.
The art of composing is alive and well; several prizes are offered in each of the four categories: 1. Endgame Studies ($75 $50 $35 $20 $10) 2. Two-move direct mates ($50 $40 $30 $20 $10) 3. Three-or-more-move direct mates ($50 $40 $30 $20 $10) 4. Helpmates ($40 $30 $20 $10).
In addition the best in each class by a U.S. composer will earn $25 credit for merchandise in the U. S. Chess Federation catalog (write Box E, 479 Broadway, Newburgh, NY 12550).
One of the judges is Benko, a grandmaster whose interest has drifted towards the realm of problems. He composed today's teaser in the shape of the numeral nine. But he also plays a mean game of chess, distinguished by an ultra positional style. Behold!
