Improving Your Game
The best way to improve is by constant practice against better players. But these can't always be found; and even if they can, constant losses may prove painful. Sooner or later the student must wend his way to a library. Since the literature of chess is vaster than any other game, a choice can be confusing. Unfortunately the best books are not always written by the best players:, and the number of articulate grandmasters can be counted on the fingers of one maimed hand.
For the beginner, almost any primer will get him started: CHESS/BEGINNER TO EXPERT (Evans), CHESS THE EASY WAY (Fine), OFFICIAL CHESS HAND-BOOK (Harkness), LASKER'S MANUAL OF CHESS, etc.
Some instructive master collections are: MY BEST GAMES OF CHESS (Alekhine, 2 vols.), 100 SELECTED GAMES (Botvinnik), LOGICAL CHESS MOVE BY MOVE (Chernev), TAL'S BEST GAMES (Clarke). MODERN CHESS BRILLIANCIES (Evans), MY 60 MEMORABLE GAMES. (Fischer), CAPABLANCA'S 100 BEST GAMES (Golombek), RUBINSTEIN'S CHESS MASTERPIECES (Kmoch), KERES' BEST GAMES and TARRASCH'S BEST GAMES (Reinfeld), MASTERS OF THE CHESSBOARD (Reti), THE ART OF SACRIFICE (Spielmann).
On the opening: MODERN CHESS OPENINGS (Evans & Korn), IDEAS BEHIND THE CHESS OPENINGS (Fine), CHESS OPENINGS: THEORY & PRACTICE and NEW TRAPS IN THE CHESS OPENINGS (Horowitz), CHESS FROM MORPHY TO BOTVINNIK (Konig), MODERN OPENING THEORY (Suetin).
On the middle game: THE MIDDLE GAME (Euwe & Kramer), JUDGMENT AND PLANNING IN CHESS (Euwe), NEW IDEAS IN CHESS (Evans). HOW TO THINK AHEAD IN CHESS (Horowitz & Reinfeld), ART OF THE MIDDLE GAME (Keres & Kotov).
On the ending: CHESSBOARD MAGIC (Chernev), BASIC CHESS ENDINGS (Fine), HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS (Howard), ROOK ENDINGS (Levenfish & Smylov).
Bedside reading: FIRESIDE BOOK OF CHESS and THE CHESS COMPANION (Chernev), A SHORT HISTORY OF CHESS (Davidson), CHESS CATECHISM (Evans), CHESS SECRETS and CHESS FOR FUN AND CHESS FOR BLOOD (Lasker). THE DEFENSE (Nabokov). TREASURY OF CHESS LORE (Reinfeld). ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CHESS (Sunnucks), THE ROYAL GAME (Zweig).
